On Friday 13th June I was provided with the opportunity to give a lecture in Italy, in the idyllic setting of Lake Orta, north of Milan and close to the Alps. The event was organised by the company Estendo, located in the same area, with ten years of successful experience behind it. The conference, which was delivered entirely in Italian, had a roundtable format with the company’s Managing Director and was moderated by a RAI journalist. During the talk, a parallel was drawn between the company and the mountain, and the truth is that in our talk we really connected with the audience. Afterwards, there was a lively questions and answers session, in which, although you are sometimes put on the spot, you are grateful because you can see that people are interested in what you have to say.

And why did they contact a mountaineer to accompany them on this celebration? Firstly, because the Managing Director is passionate about the mountains and for the 10 years the company has been in operation, during which he has always been at the forefront, he has followed my mountaineering career. He told me that I had accompanied him on many sleepless nights when he watched my videos, and that somehow it had helped him to carry on. That is why he wanted to invite me to ESTENDO’s 10th anniversary. ESTENDO focuses on providing domestic assistance, and in these 10 years it has become the number one company in the sector in Italy. They identified with me because 10 years ago they had a vision, like I may have had when I decided to climb the 14 eight-thousanders. Through their commitment, they have triumphed and achieved 10 years of existence to become the undisputed leader in their sector. On that path to the top, we have both shared many values such as commitment, ambition, achievement, non-conformism, teamwork… In short, imagine a challenge, a dream, having a vision and working tirelessly to achieve it. That is commitment. At a certain point in my mountaineering life I decided to tackle the challenge of reaching the 14 highest peaks on earth. In the end we did it, and I was the first woman to do so. This Italian company, in a particular context, decided to make a change and look for an alternative route in a business model. They took a risk, they worked hard and they triumphed. Our activities are totally different but we share the same passion for creating new goals and fighting for them.
